The intercooler cools the compressed intake air from the turbocharger or supercharger before it reaches the engine. Cooler air is denser, making more oxygen available for combustion at the same pressure. A properly functioning intercooler therefore helps support engine performance. When choosing a replacement intercooler, make sure it matches your vehicle and engine variant.
Which intercooler fits your car?
The correct intercooler depends on your vehicle’s make, model, year and engine variant. Compare the OE reference number, dimensions, mounting points and the position and diameter of the connections. Check whether your car uses an air-to-air or water-to-air intercooler, as these systems operate differently and are not directly interchangeable. Also check whether the required seals and mounting hardware are included.
When should you replace an intercooler?
A leaking or damaged intercooler can cause a loss of boost pressure and reduced engine power. A hissing sound during acceleration may also indicate a leak in the intake system. However, split boost hoses or loose connections can cause similar symptoms. Have the complete air path between the turbocharger and engine checked before replacing the intercooler.
