The coolant thermostat regulates coolant flow to the radiator, helping the engine reach and maintain its operating temperature. During warm-up, it restricts flow to the radiator. As the engine heats up, it opens to allow heat to be released through the radiator. When choosing a replacement coolant thermostat, make sure it matches your vehicle’s specifications.
Which coolant thermostat fits your car?
The correct thermostat depends on your vehicle’s make, model, year and engine variant. Compare the OE reference number, specified opening temperature, dimensions and mounting design. Check whether you need a separate thermostat or a complete thermostat housing assembly. For electronically controlled versions, the electrical connection must also match. Check whether the required seals or gaskets are included.
When should you replace a coolant thermostat?
A thermostat stuck open can cause the engine to warm up slowly or run below its intended temperature. A thermostat stuck closed can restrict cooling and cause overheating. Weak cabin heating or unusual engine temperature readings may also warrant inspection. As low coolant levels, sensor faults and other cooling system problems can cause similar symptoms, have the cause diagnosed before replacing the thermostat.
